IHRSA, state Consumer Affairs make sure clubs are following the rules

This time of year there are many people who are new to the fitness club world and may not be aware of how things work and what is/is not allowed. Conversely, there could be some clubs out there looking to take advantage of the uneducated with scams or unlawful tactics. Or, clubs may not be certified or allowed to deliver on certain promises.

Many states' attorney general office in the past couple weeks have sent out press releases to consumers warning them during the time when they are looking to fulfill goals set to begin the new year. Last week New Jersey sent out a press release to those considering joining a new gym, pointing out what to be on the lookout for. In the release was a link to the New Jersey Consumer Affairs website brief on health clubs. In case you don't know your state's page, check out www.consumeraffairsusa.org.

This is also a good time for anyone reading this to check out IHRSA's State Activity page (some content available only for members) that features legislative activity, states' Health Club Consumer Protection Statute, states 'Legislature page, summary of state's view of liability waivers, child care licensing laws and more.
