What Policies are Needed for Children in Your Club

(Photo: B kayintveen)Mike Minton discusses policies for children in health clubs in this week's Best Practices.

Q: "What are some good policies for children using a health club? For example, should we make parents sign a liability waiver or require parental supervision? What age is considered adults status?"

A: Depending on the type of facility you have and what you have available would determine your policy.

Our policy at Minton’s Sportsplex is no children under the age of 12 are allowed in the adult fitness center.  Youth 12- 15 years of age are allowed in the facility with parental supervision and a written authorization from management. This authorization would depend on the youth’s physical and mental maturity and if we have given them supervised personal training which has taught them to train safely and efficiently.

We require that any child or youth under 18 years of age, is mandatory for parent to sign a waiver of liability.  In our state (Texas) adult status is considered 18 years of age and older, it varies state to state.
