Kite-surfing Across the English Channel? What a Way to Celebrate!

By Jennifer H. McInerney

In honor of his recent 60th birthday, Sir Richard Branson, the owner of the UK-based Virgin Active chain of 167 worldwide clubs, will be setting off tomorrow on an attempt to kite-surf across the English Channel.

The serial entrepreneur plans to put his board in the water on Tuesday at 10 a.m. (GMT) in Dungeness and chase the wind all the way to the northern French port of Boulogne. He hopes to complete the crossing in three to four hours. Typically, Branson kite-surfs around Necker Island, his own private island in the Virgin Islands.

“I know that kite-surfing across the Channel will not be quite the same as kite-surfing in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean,” Branson told the AFP, “but I can’t think of anything I’d rather do, with my family and friends, to celebrate turning 60!”

Stay tuned…
