Exercise is Our Answer

By Jennifer H. McInerney

Like everyone does occasionally, a few of us here at CBI have been experiencing some health issues lately. For me, it’s insomnia. Sometimes, I can’t fall asleep for hours; other times, I wake up in the middle of the night and just can’t get back to sleep. Twice this week, I’ve awoken at 2 a.m. and not fallen back asleep until 5 a.m. and 4 a.m., respectively.

It’s not a new problem for me; it’s something I’ve dealt with for years. But it’s annoying and unnecessary. Plus, it leaves me feeling worn-out the following day.

Stress is, indisputably, the root cause: My mind races and I can’t turn it off. My trapezius muscles become tense and painful, and my whole neck stiffens, making any return to slumber elusive.

Rather than resorting to taking sleeping aides, I find that exercising regularly is truly the best medicine. Working out helps to relieve the tension in my muscles—plus, the muscle fatigue that results from both cardio and strength-training makes me so physically tired that sleep comes naturally.

When one of my colleagues and I were talking about hoping to feel back to normal soon, she said, “I definitely need to go work out!”

My thoughts exactly.
