House Passes Education Bill Without Fit Kids Act

On July 19, the House passed a bill reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) but disappointed many physical activity advocates by excluding the bipartisan FIT Kids Act, which is intended to increase physical activity opportunities in schools.

Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) and Rep. Congressman Ron Kind (D-Wis.) proposed an amendment to the final bill that included FIT Kids, but it was not taken up.

While exclusion of the Fit Kids Act is disheartening, it is highly unlikely that the Democratically controlled Senate will pass the Republican-backed legislation in its current form.  A senate version of ESEA was passed out of committee last month with the FIT Kids language included. A vote of the full senate has not been scheduled.


House to Introduce The Physical Activity Guidelines Act

As proof that making one’s voice heard on Capitol Hill does make a difference, the House of Representatives has announced that it will introduce the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Act later this month (estimated date is May 23). Attendees of the Summit specifically asked their House representatives to introduce the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Act.
