Idea: Wellness Programs Instead of Soda Taxes

According to the Chicago Tribune, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is adding a competition component to his city employee wellness program. Participants in Chicago, Illinois will compete against participants San Antonio, Texas, “to see which workforce is healthier,” the article states. Cash incentives will be awarded and soda machines in Chicago government buildings will provide calorie information. It’s National Employee Wellness Month

The month of June is dedicated to promoting healthier, happier employees for a more productive work force and to lower health care costs. National Employee Wellness Month is an annual initiative that gives business leaders tools to develop a successful wellness program.

According to a Virgin HealthMiles study, 83% of organizations surveyed said they offered wellness programs and did so to reduce health care costs, create a culture of wellness and boost productivity.

However, though more employers are implementing wellness programs, there remains a significant awareness gap among employees on the variety of benefits their employer offers. According to the study, more than 57% of employers believe employees have a good understanding the health and wellness programs they offer and how they can participate, but only 41% of employees said they had a good awareness of their employer’s programs. Also, employers often struggle with getting the proper data to inform better strategies.

PFCD sponsors National Employee Wellness Month

The Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD) will sponsor the 4th Annual National Employee Wellness Month this June. The initiative is aimed at providing business leaders with new ideas and proven strategies around employee wellness and prevention.

“At the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, we know that creating healthier opportunities in the workplace is a critical component to preventing and better managing chronic disease, which is why this week we announced our sponsorship of this year’s event,” said Ken Thorpe, Executive Director of PFCD. Other sponsors include Virgin HealthMiles, the STOP Obesity Alliance and WorldatWork.

“Workplaces have the opportunity, motive and capability to create a desire for improved personal health through carefully designed, supportive wellness programs, which can lower absenteeism and reduce medical costs,” said Thorpe. “National Employee Wellness Month provides a great opportunity to raise awareness about the critical role workplaces must play in positively affecting employee health.”
