White House Holds Summit on Childhood Obesity

Participants at the summit were asked to present three to five ideas that could be considered by President Obama’s Childhood Obesity Task Force, which is currently developing an intra-agency plan to present to the President. The experts' advice and guidance would help the task force develop measurable benchmarks for fighting childhood obesity. The audience was particularly responsive to the suggestion of integration of short-bursts of activity into regular workplace and school routines.

Frist, Booker to Vice Chair Partnership for a Healthier America

The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), the lead foundation in Michelle Obama’s fight against childhood obesity has two new honorary vice chairs. Late last week, the first lady announced that Dr. Bill Frist, the former Senate Majority Leader, and Cory Booker, the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey would be joining the work of the foundation, which seeks to serve as an independent, non-partisan organization that will mobilize the private sector, foundations, government officials, the media and others around the goals of the “Let’s Move” campaign.

IHRSA Vows Support of Let's Move Initiative

IHRSA pledged its support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative and praised the First Lady for her leadership in tackling the problem of childhood obesity—a long-standing issue that threatens both the health of America’s children and the future of our country. “On behalf of the entire health club industry, IHRSA heartily commends Mrs. Obama for standing up and leading America in a nationwide effort to solve the problem of childhood obesity,” said Joe Moore, IHRSA’s president and CEO.

White House Launches "Let's Move" Task Force on Childhood Obesity

“We know that solving our obesity challenge won’t be easy and it won’t be quick, but make no mistake about it — this problem can be solved,” Mrs. Obama said at the event. “This isn’t like putting a man on the moon or inventing the Internet. It doesn’t take a stroke of genius or a feat of technology. We have everything we need right now to help our kids lead healthy lives.”
