President’s Budget Allocates Twice As Much Money for Fitness

Last week the White House released a FY14 budget proposal, which includes a $1 million increase in funding to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. It is a small sum, relatively speaking. However, it demonstrates an important shift in priorities amidst a federal spending crunch. Details are available here on page 96.

IHRSA is a proud supporter of the President’s Council on Fitness Sports and Nutrition, collaborating on numerous health promotion initiatives including the IHRSA Joining Forces Network, the Million PALA Challenge and Get Active America!

The White House Calls on IHRSA

This month’s CBI magazine features an in-depth look at the events leading up to the launch of the industry’s successful national health promotion alliance.

Six months ago, the White House, acting at the behest of First Lady Michelle Obama, asked for IHRSA's help. The government wanted to expand its Joining Forces initiative, designed to assist military families, by offering some of them free club memberships. Today, fitness facilities coast to coast, part of the new IHRSA Joining Forces Network, are doing just that.

IHRSA "Joins Forces" With White House and Let's Move!

On Monday, IHRSA President and CEO, Joe Moore, stood alongside First Lady Michelle Obama to announce the launch of Joining Forces, an initiative to provide activated National Guard, Reservists and their immediate families with free gym memberships and personal training services. Watch a video of the announcement.

"This is the fitness industry giving back,” said Moore. "The freedoms that each of us enjoys every day are possible because of the sacrifices that our nation's military families bear. Joining Forces offers us an opportunity to provide these families with the support they are due.”

The Commitment
IHRSA hopes to offer 100,000 free health club memberships throughout the country. This is equal to more then 18 million days of free access to health clubs and has an estimated value of more than $30 million. Learn more.
How To Participate
IHRSA hopes we can count on your participation. Please join this industry-wide mission to support these deployed service members—in a manner showcasing the best we have to offer as an industry—by providing their families back home with the benefits of physical activity through a free club membership.
