IOM Findings Encourage Dynamic Exercise for Obesity Prevention

A new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) on the effectiveness of obesity prevention strategies recommends that in order to accelerate obesity prevention, the United States should implement several strategies at the same time, including integrating physical activity every day in every way; marketing what matters for a healthy life; making healthy foods and beverages available everywhere; activating employers and health care professionals and strengthening schools as the heart of health.

New numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that the annual cost for treating obesity-related illnesses in the United States is $190.2 billion, placing greater urgency on finding solutions to the obesity epidemic and physical inactivity crisis. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation asked the IOM to identify catalysts that could speed progress in obesity prevention.
