Senators Urged to Prioritize Primary Prevention

Five US senators sent a memo to their Senate colleagues last week, urging them to take action to reduce health care costs by promoting primary prevention. Senators Tom Harkin (IA), Al Franken (MN), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Richard Durbin (IL) and Tom Udall (NM) cosigned a letter that went to each member of the Senate, urging them to prioritize investments in primary prevention.

“If we are serious about improving the economy of the nation, States, municipalities, businesses and families, we must control health care costs and promote a healthy, productive populace. The best way to do that is to emphasize prevention,” the letter states.

The letter also asks for support of the Prevention and Public Health Fund and the Community Transformation Grant Program. This program supports communities in the implementation of locally-driven, evidence-based initiatives to make their communities healthier.
