House Passes Education Bill Without Fit Kids Act

On July 19, the House passed a bill reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) but disappointed many physical activity advocates by excluding the bipartisan FIT Kids Act, which is intended to increase physical activity opportunities in schools.

Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) and Rep. Congressman Ron Kind (D-Wis.) proposed an amendment to the final bill that included FIT Kids, but it was not taken up.

While exclusion of the Fit Kids Act is disheartening, it is highly unlikely that the Democratically controlled Senate will pass the Republican-backed legislation in its current form.  A senate version of ESEA was passed out of committee last month with the FIT Kids language included. A vote of the full senate has not been scheduled.
