Surgeon General Speaks Out About Weight and Weight of the Nation

Incoming U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin spoke in a televised interview about her struggle with weight. "I'm just like 67 percent of Americans. I struggle with my weight just like they do," said Benjamin. "So I understand. And I want to have them help me, and I'll help them, and we'll work together to try to become a healthier nation."

Federal Funding for State Policies Addressing Obesity

New research released in the upcoming issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, found that states that received funding from two obesity prevention programs funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention implemented twice as many obesity policy initiatives as states that did not receive funding.

European Federations Discuss Policy in Lisbon

Public IHRSA recently concluded the Lisbon, Portugal meeting of the European Federations for the health and fitness industry. Representatives from 12 European countries, along with IHRSA management, met to discuss the European fitness industry, including public policy in the region.

Public Policy updates included ILAM and IHRSA participation in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and submission of commentary on VAT legislation. AGAP, the federation representing the Portuguese club industry, discussed their recent success in reducing the VAT tax to 5% on health club memberships. In addition, Norway, Belgium, and the UK discussed their respective countries' issues affecting the industry, which included proposed VAT tax, social security tax, and allocation of country grants.

CDC Study Finds Physical Activity Programs Are Money Well Spent

Community-based physical activity interventions designed to promote more active lifestyles among adults are cost-effective in reducing heart disease, stroke, colorectal and breast cancers, and type 2 diabetes, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
