Fitness Professionals Brainstorm Business Opportunities Offered by Health Care Reform

Health club owners, personal trainers, and doctors met at IHRSA 2014 in San Diego to discuss capitalizing on new business opportunities presented by the Affordable Care Act's expanded obesity treatment coverage. Because of the ACA, all new health plans must cover obesity screening and counseling at no cost to patients. Though it remains unclear what "obesity counseling" encompasses under the law, many in the fitness industry foresee an increase in doctors referring patients to health clubs and personal trainers.

This is an opportunity the industry should proactively embrace, says Scott Goudeseune, CEO of the American Council on Exercise. "We want the medical community to look at us, trust us, understand that we can really be a vital member of that team," he said at the meeting. Goudeseune advocated for developing health club-physician relationships, so that doctors know which clubs and personal trainers to trust.
