AMA Says Obesity Is a Disease

The American Medical Association (AMA) has officially recognized obesity as a disease, a move that could lead to greater physician attention to this condition and related ones, like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

The decision has no legal authority, but per The New York Times, the AMA and many public health advocates believe viewing obesity as a medical condition could lead to more reimbursements for weight loss counseling. Last year, an advisory panel to the Health and Human Services Department recommended that doctors screen all adults for obesity and refer patients with a body mass index over 30 to “intensive weight management counseling,” which has yet to be defined but could include referrals to health club weight loss programs.
