Editorial shows local gyms are better options than YMCA

On the surface local YMCAs look ideal to almost any resident living close to one of the thousands across the country. And, it is a non-profit organization, which often means it is giving portions of its revenue back to the community.

Well, not so fast.

In an editorial in the Daily Courier in Forest City, N.C. - where a YMCA is proposed - YMCAs are exposed as an organization that takes from local businesses, and in some cases, like nearby Cleveland County, doesn't give back to the community. Of the $4.5 million taken in in 2011, less than $200,000 was distributed in financial assistance.
