Democrats Echo Republicans Call for Healthier Lifestyles

Support for healthier lifestyles was included in the 2012 Democratic platform released online earlier this week. The platform is a summary of the party’s positions on issues such as health care, the economy, foreign policy and education, and will guide the actions of Democratic lawmakers over the next four years. On the importance of physical activity, the platform says, “We support parents and their children as they work to lead healthier lives. With prevention and treatment initiatives on obesity and public health, Democrats are leading the way on supporting healthier, more physically active families and healthy children.”

Like the Republican platform, which was released last week and also includes language that emphasizes the importance of healthy lifestyles, the Democratic platform does not mention specific initiatives to reduce inactivity and obesity. Nonetheless, it is a step in the right direction, toward making physical activity a priority for all Americans.

Earlier this year, IHRSA worked with party officials on both sides of the aisle to include language about healthy lifestyles in each of their platforms. Now we are pleased to see both parties placing greater value on the cost-saving benefits of healthy lifestyles.
