Are Americans Ignoring the True Causes of Obesity?

According to My Health News Daily, there is much evidence to suggest that a host of environmental factors, such as work schedule and food availability, are the driving force behind the obesity epidemic. Yet, 64 percent of Americans believe that individual habits, such as overeating and not getting enough exercise, were to blame.

Certainly diet and exercise are an integral part of managing one’s weight, and no one can make the right decisions for you. But external forces—such as limited access to places for exercise, a demanding work schedule that does not allow time for the gym—have a large hand in influencing those decisions.

Individuals could make better choices if they had greater incentive to do so, such as a tax-free or employer-provided health club membership. Helen Durkin, IHRSA’s Executive Vice President of Global Public Policy sums it up perfectly, “The key is to make the healthy choice the easy choice.”
