Obese Medicare Beneficiaries May Receive Treatment Services

Obese individuals who receive Medicare benefits may be eligible for “unprecedented obesity treatment services,” according to the Campaign to End Obesity. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are considering a decision proposal for “intensive behavioral therapy,” which includes screening for obesity in adults by measuring BMI, nutritional assessment, and intensive behavioral counseling and therapy to promote sustained weight loss through high intensity exercise and diet interventions. View the complete CMS decision memo. As of now, it is unclear if such therapy will include utilization of health clubs, but we will continue to monitor and inform members of any updates.

The proposed decision is open to public comment through September 30, 2011. Individuals and organizations interested commenting on CMS’ final decision may do so online by clicking here.
