PFCD Hill Briefing How Health Indices Promote Prevention and Overall Health

Metrics are a necessary part of losing weight and improving health, and this was the underlying sentiment of a briefing held on Capitol Hill last week, hosted by Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD) and WellPoint, Inc, a health benefits provider. The briefing, titled, “Partnerships in Health: Applying Metrics to Target Interventions and Improve Health,” explored how health indices can help identify areas for health improvement and also effective, measurable solutions. The event featured a keynote address from Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-3), who is a co-chair of the congressional wellness caucus, and a panel discussion with health care providers and prevention and wellness professionals.

Discussions focused on reducing escalating health care costs by using metrics to drill down on effective solutions for preventing chronic disease, which currently accounts for 75% of U.S. health care costs. Such metrics included WellPoint's Member Health Index and Healthways' Well-Being Index.

Dr. Ken Thorpe, executive Director of Partnerships to Fight Chronic Disease, said in a press release, “Our goal has been—and will continue to be—simple: to show that chronic disease needn't be a drain on the health care system and that with the appropriate long-term measures in place, we can improve the lives of millions and soon realize a healthier America."
