Obesity Still Growing: Half of US Obese by 2030

As reported by the Washington Post, half of all U.S. adults will be obese by 2030, according to a report issued by The Lancet, a British medical journal. This prediction contradicts findings from reports issued last year that suggested obesity rates were beginning to plateau. In other words, obesity may be slowing, but it is showing no signs of stopping. The Lancet report predicts the U.S. obesity rate will rise from 32% to about 50% for men, and from 35% to between 45-52% for women by 2030. Health care costs associated with obesity will also increase by $66 billion per year. Learn more about the report at www.thelancet.com/series/obesity.

The most alarming rates of obesity in the U.S. are among children of all age groups. Childhood obesity has increased more than fourfold among those ages 6 to 11 and more than 23 million children and teenagers ages 2 to 19 are obese or overweight. This September, there is an extraordinary opportunity to build awareness and take action. Organizations across the country will plan and carry out activities that build awareness about childhood obesity and encourage action.

Now is a great time for your club to get involved nationally, as well as in your state, city and home. This toolkit provides information, web links and tools to promote and celebrate September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  Learn more at www.healthierkidsbrighterfutures.org.
