Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Lays Plans for Wellness Incentives

City employees in Chicago may soon be getting the push they need to get in shape, according to an article by the Chicago Sun-Times. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced plans for a city wellness plan that would offer a “multi-pronged” approach to offering incentives for healthy behaviors, though specifics have not been disclosed. His plan to reduce health care costs by as much as $240 million over four years includes weight loss programs and counseling, exercise, medication, smoking cessation, and wellness training. Read the full article.

Emanuel’s priorities have seemingly shifted from the campaign trail, when he proposed expanding the state sales tax to luxury services (including health club membership and possible health club services). Since his election Mayor Emanuel has taken a pledge to not create any new taxes in his first year. IHRSA is monitoring the issue and will keep members informed on any new developments.
