IHRSA Letter to Congress Supporting FIT Kids Act

In a step towards teaching our nation’s youth about the importance of exercise, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) have re-introduced the Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids Act) in both the Senate and the House.

FIT Kids would increase opportunities for exercise for children throughout the school day, establish reporting requirements to ensure the quality and quantity of physical education and offer funding to better equip school faculty to promote healthy lifestyles and activity. The bill would also fund a study to examine the impact of health and physical activity on student achievement and effective ways to increase exercise during the school day.

IHRSA, alongside other leading companies in the health and wellness sector, including the American Heart Association and Trust for America’s Health, signed a letter addressed to Congress in support of the FIT Kids Act, asking lawmakers to “make the health of our nation’s children a priority in the 112th Congress by cosponsoring the Fitness Integrated with Teaching (FIT) Kids Act of 2011.”
