Senate Committee Holds Hearing on Chronic Disease Prevention

Last week the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing to discuss the nation’s pressing need for chronic disease prevention. The hearing focused on important advancements in chronic disease prevention such as mammograms, well woman visits, family planning, and heart diseases screenings that are helping to improve the health and well-being of women and families as well as the detrimental impact of repealing these advancements.

Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, a senior member of the committee spoke passionately about the power of primary prevention during the hearing. “Evidence based preventive health services saves lives, improves health and wellness, and reduces health care costs,” said Mikulski. “It is so important that we bring together these experts to learn more about our efforts to prevent these deadly and costly diseases which are bankrupting our nation and killing our loved ones," she added.

After a successful Industry Advocacy Summit, IHRSA is now working with members of the Senate to pass legislation that would make offsite-wellness facilities tax deductible for employers. IHRSA encourages all health club operators to ask their lawmakers to support this legislation, along with other health promotion initiatives.
