October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a nationwide promotion of breast cancer awareness and an effort to share relevant information about the disease, prevention, screening methods, and treatment. A burgeoning part of the campaign against breast cancer is bringing attention to the growing evidence that women and men can reduce their chances of developing breast cancer by exercising regularly.

Over the past few years, a significant body of research has been published that highlights the positive role exercise can have in the prevention and control of the disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that one third of all cancer deaths are due to nutrition and physical activity factors

Additionally, exercise is being incorporated into treatment methods. This past July, a roundtable was convened by American College of Sports Medicine “to distill the literature on the safety and efficacy of exercise training during and after adjuvant cancer therapy and to provide guidelines.” The roundtable concluded that exercise during and after cancer treatments results in improvements in physical functioning, quality of life, and cancer-related fatigue.
